We are using special research collars fitted with GPS to document lion movements across a diverse landscape. Mapping lion movements across protected areas and community lands provides valuable information on dispersal areas and high-conflict zones. We specifically collar young adult lions as they disperse from their maternal prides in order to map their movements and identify key corridors.
By mapping the movements of these young adults, we are able to identify areas that are important for lion connectivity. Collaring lions also helps our team and conservancy managements keep herders informed of lion locations, and therefore helps avoid potential lion-human conflict.
