We have not only employed the use of traditional cultural skills and knowledge in lion monitoring, but we have combined technology too. In addition to using special GPS-enabled collars to understand lion dispersal areas and prevent potential conflict, we use the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) for lion monitoring and community engagement. SMART is a conservation technology platform with different analysis tools that guide conservation managers in making data-backed decisions. Our lion monitoring teams use SMART for daily patrols to record wildlife observations and to assist us in monitoring carnivores, prey and livestock populations. In addition, community meetings are recorded using SMART. We also use Survey123 to collect our data under our Mama Simba and Kura’s Pride programmes.
