Buffalo Chases Lions… Again!!!

A few days ago I was tracking Lguret, the lion we radio-collared a month ago, when I found him walking in some saltbush plains watching a buffalo in Samburu National Reserve.  He was with his brother Loirish.  They came across a giraffe and showed no interest in him, but then appeared to be very wary of a buffalo that was in the vicinity of the area.

Lguret suddenly started moving off quickly and I turned around to see why.  The buffalo was running towards him and Loirish!  The buffalo sped past me and the lions scampered up into Koitogor Hill for safety.  Lguret went one way and Loirish the other.  The buffalo did not give up  -he chased Loirish up some rocks and I lost sight of Lguret as he fled in fear.  The photos below show what happened.

This is the second time I have witnessed a serious buffalo-lion chase here in Samburu.  The first was in September when 3 buffalo chased Uni and these very same males.

what’s up with these two maneless males? i have forgotten their age. are they still very young? like under four ( not yet at their prime)? i just can’t see two males in their prime are bullied by one buffalo. that buffalo is asking for trouble if he dared to mass with tasvro lions in the duba plains. these lionesses would have taken him down in couple minutes!

prides are too small in this area for these nasty beasts for sure. i remember seeing one small pride of lionesses led a buffalo to chase them away from the buffalo herd into a bush. in that bush the lioness’s pride was waiting and then the whole pride which was made of only five or four lionesses strong brought the buffalo down!

Hi Sauwah,
Yes it is the very same males that keep running from the buffalo! They are between 3.5 – 4 years old and are the main resident males in the reserve. I agree, if this was Tsavo or even Shaba (next door to Samburu), they would not be running like this! But these lions here seem to have a real fear of buffalo and also are constantly chased by elephants too. This is mainly because they dont have too much support – prides are small as you say, and also the lions tend to move about either alone or in pairs.
