Lion Scouts

Monitoring Wildlife and Enhancing Security
Lion Scouts conduct daily patrols within the conservancy to monitor lion movements, census wildlife populations, and keep local people and project personnel informed on wildlife issues with the aim of promoting human-lion co-existence. Scouts also record wild prey and livestock locations during daily patrols within the Conservancy, and this data helps Ewaso Lions track prey and livestock abundance and movement to measure the health of the ecosystem.

Lion Scouts communicate regularly with local communities so herders can avoid areas where carnivores are present. Scouts also work with local people to improve livestock husbandry and prevent potential livestock loss.

Importantly, Ewaso Lion Scouts communicate with Westgate Conservancy Scouts to report incidences of human insecurity issues such as cattle raiding and other illegal activities.
